This is a story about identity theft and how I discovered my identity had been stolen. Some of the headaches, the endless paperwork and the things I wished I would have known years ago. I am determined to get back to a FICO score above 720

Check All Three Reporting Agencies

OK, so I signed up with Equifax and got my online credit report from them. I thought that credit reports were all the same but it seems that all three agencies have significant differences so obtain all three of them just to make sure. I discovered that there was a third account that had been opened at a furniture store but they had not charged anything to it.

I found out that obtaining a copy of your credit report is an easy and virtually painless process. You can go to each of the agencies individually or you can go to the only authorized site for annual credit reporting at www.annualcreditreport.com . They can also be reached at 1-877-322-8228.

I wanted to get this resolved as quickly as possible and was not prepared to wait so I ordered them from each agency. This cost me about $60 but I had them in my hands within a few hours. I found out that you are entitled to a free report if you have been denied credit, employment or insurance based on a credit inquiry within the last 60 days. If this happens to you you can contact the reporting agency directly and they will provide you a free copy.
